There are journeys that are more than just travel; they are a pause in life, a moment to listen to the wind, to gaze at the vastness and height of the mountains, and to remember that the world is bigger than our worries. That is what every traveler feels when traversing the Dalaguete–Mantalongon–Badian Road—a road that seems to carry one from the noise of the city to the peaceful embrace of the mountains of southern Cebu.
Scenic Mountain Vistas
As the journey begins, the mountains of Dalaguete slowly unveil their beauty. The rolling hills of Paling-Paling resemble green waves kissed by the morning sun, while the silence of Mag-Alambak brings a peace hard to find in the city. Here, the air is cold, the clouds seem close enough to touch, and time appears to slow down. Every turn in the road reveals a new landscape that looks like a picture from a dream: hills covered in greenery, trees swaying in the wind, and clouds floating above the mountains.
Life in the Highlands
Heading to the higher part of the town, one can see the lives of the farmers who are the backbone of Dalaguete. The Dalaguete Vegetables Demo Farm, formerly known as the Flower Garden, is full of color and life. Here, crops grow under the cool climate of the mountains, vegetables still fresh with morning dew.
Further ahead, the terraced rice fields of Maloray illustrate the wisdom and diligence of the mountain people—rice paddies that seem painted by nature on the hillsides. When viewed from above, the fields look like green stairs climbing toward the clouds.
The Mantalongon Trading Center
The journey is not complete without passing through the Mantalongon Trading Center, the center of the vegetable industry in Cebu. Here, one can feel the vibrancy of mountain life: trucks full of fresh vegetables, farmers exchanging smiles and stories, and the smell of soil freshly watered by rain. The place is full of life, but despite its bustle, the warmth and hospitality of the people living in the mountains remain.
A Breath of Fresh Air
But above all the sights, the best gift of Dalaguete is the feeling of breathing again. Here, the mountains are not just to be looked at; they are a reminder that there is beauty that remains silent, waiting to be discovered by those who are willing to stop, look, and listen to the voice of the wind, to gaze at the smiles of the farmers, and to experience the warmth of their love for visitors.
