House of Representatives Commits to Constitutional Process in Impeachment Proceedings

House Assistant Minority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong has emphasized that the House of Representatives will continue to follow existing rules in handling impeachment proceedings. Adiong stated that impeachment is a serious constitutional mechanism and will be conducted by the House in an orderly, transparent, and rules-based manner.

Response to Second Impeachment Complaint Attempt

The lawmaker made this statement following an attempt by militant groups to file a second impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The complaint was not officially received because Secretary General Cheloy Garafil was not in the office, having traveled to Taiwan to receive an award. Although the group left a copy of the complaint at Garafil's office, Adiong clarified that the Secretary General's temporary absence does not affect the constitutional process.

Formal Procedure for Impeachment Complaints

Adiong explained that when a formal complaint is submitted, it will be referred to the Committee on Justice for evaluation of its sufficiency in substance, without prejudging the outcome. Currently, only one verified and duly endorsed impeachment complaint against the President exists, filed by lawyer Andre de Jesus on January 19.

Upcoming Developments and Timeline

Secretary General Garafil is expected to return to work on Monday, January 26, coinciding with the House's resumption of session after the holiday break. This timeline underscores the House's commitment to maintaining procedural integrity in all impeachment matters.
