On the eve of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, Senator Panfilo "Ping" Lacson called on his fellow senators to set aside their differences and cooperate as an institution, while also recognizing tennis star Alex Eala as an inspiration that has united Filipinos.
Lacson Highlights Eala's Historic Achievement
According to Lacson, Eala's historic victory came at the perfect time, providing positive news amid what he described as a "highly toxic atmosphere" in the country. He called the tennis star a "detoxifier" and a unifier for a deeply divided nation after she became the first Filipino to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament, defeating former champion Iga Swiatek at Wimbledon.
Impeachment Trial as a Test for the Senate
Lacson emphasized that the impeachment trial is an opportunity for the Senate to prove it can fulfill its duties without conflict and personal clashes. He stated that debate should prevail over insults, and senators should prioritize the welfare of the Senate as an institution. The senator added that this call was echoed by the majority and minority blocs during a caucus held on Friday, which was attended by Senators Loren Legarda and Robinhood Padilla.
Lacson stressed that the Senate has a responsibility to the people to ensure that the estimated ₱25 million it spends daily results in quality public service, not internal strife.
