Procedural Issues May Precede VP Sara Duterte Impeachment Trial Start
Procedural Issues May Precede VP Sara Duterte Trial

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is set to begin on Monday, but the first day may be devoted to resolving procedural motions and legal issues rather than presenting evidence, according to House prosecution spokesperson Ace Barbers.

Prosecution Prioritizes Solid Trial Foundation

Barbers, a key member of the prosecution panel, emphasized the need to ensure a smooth and legally sound process. “We must first address any procedural lapses or legal problems to guarantee the trial proceeds without interruption,” he said. Resolving these preliminary matters is a critical step before the presentation of evidence and witnesses, which could begin in the following days.

The trial is expected to last more than seven months. Barbers confirmed that all prosecutors, including newly appointed private prosecutors who have not yet filed their entry of appearance, plan to attend the opening session.

Panel Ready for Extended Proceedings

Despite the anticipated focus on procedural issues, Barbers asserted that the prosecution panel is fully prepared to present evidence and witnesses. He acknowledged the possibility of a lengthy trial but stressed that the team is ready for any duration.

“We have a solid working relationship among the lawyers, despite their numbers and diverse legal backgrounds,” Barbers noted. The panel includes both government prosecutors and private lawyers, all cooperating to ensure a unified case against the Vice President.

The impeachment complaint against Sara Duterte stems from allegations of betrayal of public trust and other constitutional violations. The trial marks a significant political event in the Philippines, with the Senate acting as the impeachment court.
