Basketball Legend Stands with Cebu in Demand for Flood Justice

Philippine basketball icon Ramon Fernandez has publicly declared his support for Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro's campaign to seek justice for victims of the devastating floods that struck various parts of Cebu Province. The catastrophic flooding was triggered by Typhoon Tino on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, claiming numerous lives and sweeping away homes.

Social Media Solidarity from a Sports Hero

Through social media, the former four-time PBA Most Valuable Player expressed his profound sympathy for those affected by the disaster. In a personal initiative, Fernandez created a graphic bearing the powerful slogan "Justice for Cebu" and paired it with his own photograph, making it his Facebook profile picture to amplify the message.

His post was accompanied by an emotional caption: "I AM PROUD TO BE A CEBUANO! This is my second home, my heart. And today, I stand with my fellow Cebuanos in one voice: JUSTICE FOR CEBU." He further emphasized, "We deserve better! Honest service, true compassion and real protection for our people. Let this image be a symbol of love for our beloved Cebu and a call for accountability, hope and change."

Billions in Flood Control Projects Under Scrutiny

Governor Baricuatro's push for justice comes amid her recent call for a formal investigation into the officials and contractors involved in flood control projects valued at over P26 billion in Cebu. She expressed outrage that despite the massive funding allocated for these infrastructure projects, they failed to prevent the severe flooding brought by Typhoon Tino, which she described as the "deadliest flooding in years."

Fernandez, who was born in Maasin City but has long resided in Cebu, wholeheartedly endorsed Baricuatro's move. In an interview with SuperBalita Cebu, he stated firmly, "Somebody has to answer for it. It is not acceptable that no one is held accountable. We will see the results of this, but somebody has to be held accountable."

Official Investigation Gains Momentum

According to a report from Sun.Star Cebu, Governor Baricuatro confirmed that the Provincial Government has already submitted documents requested by the National Bureau of Investigation in Central Visayas (NBI 7). This submission is part of the ongoing probe into the flood control projects.

The NBI is tasked with submitting the findings of its investigation to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI). This commission was formed by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. to investigate alleged corruption in flood control projects across the nation, signaling a high-level response to the infrastructure failures.
