Court of Appeals Grants AMLC Petition to Freeze Assets of Candaba Mayor and Daughter
The Court of Appeals has issued a significant ruling, granting the petition filed by the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) to freeze the assets of Candaba Mayor Rene Maglanque and his daughter Macy Monique Maglanque. This legal action stems from their alleged involvement in irregularities related to flood control projects in the region.
Details of the Asset Freeze Order
According to a report from the Bilyonaryo News Channel, the freeze order encompasses a wide range of assets. It includes multiple bank accounts, an insurance policy, and a Toyota Land Cruiser owned by the mayor. Additionally, six bank accounts belonging to his daughter, Macy Monique Maglanque, are also covered under this order.
The AMLC's investigation revealed that Mayor Maglanque holds a 98.65 percent ownership stake in Globalcrete Builders Inc. This company is reported to have secured approximately P3.4 billion worth of flood control projects between 2018 and 2025. The council further noted that Globalcrete Builders Inc. engaged in cheque transactions with the embattled Discaya construction companies, adding another layer of scrutiny to the case.
Implications and Broader Context
This asset freeze is a critical step in the ongoing probe into potential corruption and money laundering linked to public infrastructure projects. The AMLC's move underscores the government's commitment to addressing financial misconduct, particularly in sectors involving substantial public funds like flood control initiatives.
The case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in local governance, especially concerning projects that impact community safety and welfare. As the legal proceedings continue, further details may emerge regarding the extent of the alleged involvement and any additional parties implicated in these flood control project issues.
