Major Maritime Rescue Operation Saves 200 Passengers in Basilan Waters

In a swift and coordinated response, Philippine maritime authorities successfully rescued approximately 200 passengers from a distressed vessel in the seawaters of Basilan province on Monday, February 2, 2026. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to ensure safety in the country's maritime routes.

Timely Intervention Prevents Potential Disaster

According to Police Colonel Jose Manuel Payos, chief of the Regional Maritime Unit–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (RMU-BAR), the rescue operation commenced around 5:30 a.m. along the seawaters of Pangasaan Island, Lantawan, Basilan. The vessel, identified as M/L AS Express, encountered a mechanical problem while en route from Banguingui, Sulu, to Zamboanga City.

Payos confirmed in his official report: "More or less 200 passengers on board were successfully rescued and safely escorted to Zamboanga City." The rescue was conducted jointly by maritime policemen and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel aboard BRP Tubbataha, demonstrating effective inter-agency cooperation.

Authorities Emphasize Vigilance and Reporting

Following the successful operation, Payos urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any maritime incidents or suspicious activities in their communities to the concerned authorities. This call to action underscores the importance of community involvement in maintaining maritime security and safety.

Separate Rescue Operation in Tawi-Tawi

In a related development, maritime policemen conducted another rescue operation off Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, on Friday, January 30. The Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station reported that the wooden-hulled vessel M/L Piaksa experienced engine malfunction while sailing from Bongao to Sibutu.

The four passengers aboard were safely brought to the headquarters of the 1st Special Operations Unit of the maritime police in Tawi-Tawi. This incident further illustrates the routine challenges faced by maritime travelers in the region and the consistent readiness of rescue teams.

These back-to-back rescue operations showcase the dedication of Philippine maritime forces in safeguarding lives at sea, particularly in the southern regions where such incidents are not uncommon. The successful outcomes reinforce the critical role of prompt response and coordinated efforts in preventing maritime tragedies.
