AFP, Navy Clarify Allegations by Former Marine Troops

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) issued a clarification on Tuesday regarding allegations made by Atty. Levito Baligod, who claimed to have evidence of corruption involving 18 Marines, allegedly former colleagues of surprise witness Master Sgt. Orly Regala Guteza. According to the AFP, such allegations should be examined through appropriate legal and investigative processes.

AFP Warns Against Unverified Information

The AFP also reminded both active and retired troops to avoid spreading unverified information. In a statement, the AFP warned that disinformation could harm the public, stating that such actions do not deserve public trust. This caution comes amid concerns about the potential impact of false claims on military integrity and public perception.

Baligod's Claims and Document Presentation

Baligod, a former senatorial candidate in 2016, presented documents purportedly containing affidavits from Marines detailing the distribution of money-filled male-maleta bags to unnamed politicians. These allegations have sparked controversy, with the AFP urging a thorough review to ensure accuracy and fairness in handling the matter.

Philippine Navy Denies Involvement

In response, the Philippine Navy swiftly denied the involvement of any of its members. According to Navy spokesperson Capt. Marissa Martinez, two to four individuals mentioned in the claims were never members of the Navy or Marine Corps. Martinez emphasized that the Navy has no record of their service, contradicting Baligod's assertions.

Status of Guteza and Other Marines

Martinez further clarified that Master Sgt. Orly Regala Guteza has been retired since June 2020 and is no longer under the Navy's administrative authority. Most of the other individuals referenced in the allegations were either dishonorably discharged or have retired properly, according to Navy records. This information aims to provide context on the current status of those involved.

The AFP and Philippine Navy's statements highlight the importance of due process and the risks of misinformation in military affairs. As the situation develops, both organizations stress the need for verified facts and adherence to legal protocols to maintain public confidence and institutional credibility.
