Army Commander Visits 21IB Troops After Basilan Ferry Sinking Incident

In a significant display of military leadership and care, Brigadier General Alaric Avelino Delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Brigade, personally visited soldiers of the 21st Infantry Battalion (21IB) who survived the tragic sinking of M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 near Baluk-Baluk Island, Hadji Muhtamad, Basilan. The visit occurred on Friday, January 30, 2026, as part of efforts to assess the troops' well-being and boost their morale following the maritime disaster.

Details of the Incident and Survivors

The sinking took place on January 26, 2026, approximately 2.75 nautical miles northeast of Baluk-Baluk Island, while the vessel was en route from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu. According to Brigadier General Delos Santos, 32 of the survivors were troops from the 21IB based in Sulu province. These soldiers were among 40 personnel returning to duty after their holiday break.

Delos Santos explained in a phone interview on Sunday, February 1, that 33 of the 40 troops had boarded M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, operated by Aleson Shipping Lines, while the remaining seven traveled on a vessel from Montenegro Shipping Lines. Tragically, Sergeant Windel Sabuyas, one of the 33 soldiers on the sunken ferry, remains missing, with ongoing prayers for his safety.

Commander's Visit and Support Efforts

During his visit to the 21IB headquarters in Luuk, Sulu, Brigadier General Delos Santos focused on checking the physical and emotional condition of the troops, providing much-needed moral support in the aftermath of the tragedy. He commended the soldiers for their resilience, courage, and dedication, highlighting their heroic actions during the incident.

"Despite the risk to their own lives, they displayed various forms of heroism during the incident. Many helped save civilians, particularly women and children, before securing their own safety," Delos Santos stated. He noted that Sergeant Sabuyas was among those who demonstrated such bravery.

Injuries and Recovery Support

Some of the soldiers sustained injuries in the sinking, with two reported to have suffered fractured arms and legs. They are currently recuperating in hospitals. Delos Santos emphasized the Philippine Army leadership's commitment to soldier welfare, assuring that comprehensive support will be provided:

  • Medical assistance for physical recovery
  • Psychological support to address emotional trauma
  • Administrative aid to facilitate smooth reintegration

He stressed the importance of troop welfare, mental resilience, and operational readiness as key priorities for the brigade. The commander's visit underscores the military's dedication to ensuring that survivors receive the necessary care to fully recover and resume their duties, reinforcing the bond between leadership and personnel in times of crisis.
