Ceremony Formalizes Peace Agreement

The peace settlement was formalized during a ceremony held on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the headquarters of the 1103Bde in Barangay Bonbon, Patikul, Sulu. Signatories to the historic peace pact were the Hassan family of Barangay Langhub, Patikul, and the Idjas family of Barangay Lower Laus, Talipao.

This event brought together representatives from the municipal governments of Patikul and Talipao, partner security agencies, and various stakeholders whose contributions were instrumental in achieving reconciliation. Additionally, all battalions under the 1103Bde were present, demonstrating unified support for these peace-building efforts.

Addressing the Challenges of Rido

Brigadier General Emmanuel Cabasan, commander of the 1103Bde, highlighted that the rido—a term for a long-standing family feud—had persisted for a considerable period, posing significant challenges to peace, security, and social harmony in the affected communities. He emphasized the urgency of resolving such conflicts through peaceful means to prevent further escalation.

The settlement process was anchored on:

  • Dialogue and mediation
  • Mutual understanding between the parties
  • Engagement of traditional leaders, elders, and key stakeholders

Cabasan expressed his deep respect and appreciation for the genuine cooperation and willingness of both families to choose peace over conflict, noting that this initiative significantly contributes to peace, stability, and cooperation in Sulu province.

Collective Commitment to Sustainable Peace

The successful settlement reflects the collective commitment of communities, government institutions, and security forces to harmony and sustainable peace in Sulu. It also highlights the vital role of community leaders, elders, and stakeholders in:

  1. Strengthening relationships among affected groups
  2. Preventing further conflict through structured mediation
  3. Fostering mutual understanding and reconciliation

This military-brokered peace pact serves as a model for resolving similar disputes in the region, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in building a more peaceful and secure environment for all residents.
