Joint Forces Apprehend BIFF Field Commander and Medic in South Cotabato Operation

In a significant blow to terrorist activities in Mindanao, law enforcement personnel successfully arrested a field commander of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) along with his accompanying medic during a coordinated joint operation on Friday, February 27, 2026. The operation took place in Bonao village, located within the municipality of Tupi in South Cotabato province.

Identities and Charges of the Apprehended Suspects

Military officials publicly identified the detained individuals on Monday, March 2, 2026. Lieutenant Colonel Al Victor Burkley, who commands the 6th Infantry Battalion (6IB), named the suspects as Nasrullah Omar Onsek, also known by the alias Kagui Tatang, and Rowaida Omar, alias Kagui Rowaida. According to Burkley, Onsek held the position of field commander for the BIFF–Bungos Faction, while Omar served as the group's primary medic, providing medical support to its members.

The arrests were executed based on valid warrants of arrest. Brigadier General Omar Orozco, commander of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade (1MIB), detailed that Onsek and Omar are now facing serious legal charges. These include multiple counts of attempted murder, destructive arson, and direct violations of the Republic Act 11479, commonly known as the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020.

Coordinated Effort and Seized Contraband

The operation was spearheaded by the Tupi Municipal Police Station, which received substantial tactical support from the 6th Infantry Battalion and the 1st Mechanized Infantry Brigade. This exemplary collaboration between police and military units proved crucial for the mission's success. During the apprehension, security forces confiscated several dangerous items from the suspects, including a .45-caliber pistol, corresponding ammunition, and a live grenade, thereby neutralizing an immediate threat to public safety.

Military Leadership Commends Operation and Reaffirms Commitment

Major General Jose Vladimir Cagara, serving as commander of both the 6th Infantry Division (6ID) and the Joint Task Force (JTF)-Central, issued a formal statement praising the joint forces involved. "The arrest of these individuals is a clear testament to our steadfast and relentless campaign against terrorism and criminality in our jurisdiction," Cagara declared. He emphasized that "it also demonstrates the importance of tight coordination and unity between our armed forces and the police in law enforcement."

Cagara further asserted that the 6ID and JTF-Central remain unwaveringly committed to protecting civilians and maintaining peace and order across the region. He highlighted that this successful operation serves as tangible proof of the National Government's ongoing and determined efforts to establish and promote long-term security and stability in Mindanao, directly combating groups that threaten public welfare.
