The Coast Guard Sea Marshal Force has successfully seized a shipment of smuggled cigarettes valued at approximately P250,850 in a targeted law enforcement operation. This intelligence-driven action took place aboard a commercial ferry during its voyage from Jolo, Sulu, to Zamboanga City on Tuesday, January 27.

Intelligence Report Leads to Discovery

According to the Coast Guard Station (CGS)-Zamboanga, duty Sea Marshals acted on a specific intelligence report to conduct roving inspections on the vessel. Their efforts led to the discovery of abandoned bags containing imported cigarettes labeled as “BOSQU.” The items were immediately secured and safeguarded until the ferry arrived at the Port of Zamboanga.

Joint Inventory and Confiscation Details

A joint inventory was performed by Coast Guard personnel and Port Police, which accounted for eight bags containing 175 reams of smuggled cigarettes. The estimated market value of these items was determined to be P250,850. Following the seizure, the confiscated cigarettes were turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and further legal action.

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of Philippine authorities to combat smuggling activities in the region, particularly in maritime routes. The use of intelligence reports underscores the proactive measures being taken to enforce customs laws and protect local markets from illicit goods.
