Maguindanao del Sur Communities Voluntarily Turn Over High-Powered Weapons
In a significant development for peace and security efforts in Central Mindanao, residents from various villages in Datu Anggal Midtimbang, Maguindanao del Sur, have voluntarily surrendered eight high-powered firearms to government authorities. This coordinated action took place on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as part of the ongoing Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) management program, which aims to curb the illegal possession of firearms and ensure safer communities across the region.
Military Officials Hail Successful Firearms Turnover
Lieutenant Colonel William Sabado, acting commander of the 1st Mechanized Infantry Battalion, confirmed that the surrender operation was successfully executed with the assistance of local officials and cooperative residents. The event underscores the growing collaboration between military forces and civilian populations in addressing security challenges in Maguindanao del Sur.
Brigadier General Edgar Catu, commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, formally received the surrendered weapons during a ceremony held at the Datu Anggal Midtimbang municipal hall. The proceedings were witnessed by Mayor Nathaniel Midtimbang, highlighting the local government's active role in peace-building initiatives.
Detailed Inventory of Surrendered Firearms
The weapons surrendered by the villagers included a diverse array of high-powered military-grade equipment, demonstrating the serious commitment to disarmament. The complete list comprises:
- One 60-millimeter (MM) mortar
- One Rocket Propelled Grenade
- One 7.62-MM rifle
- One Grenade Launcher
- One M203 grenade launcher
- Three M-79 grenade launchers
This collection represents a substantial reduction in potential firepower that could otherwise threaten community stability in the area.
Strong Statements from Military Leadership
In a public statement following the ceremony, Brigadier General Catu emphasized the importance of community cooperation in the fight against illegal weapons. "The surrender of the weapons is a clear proof of the strong cooperation of the communities in our fight against illegal weapons. The purpose of this step is to preserve the peace and security of every family in Maguindanao del Sur," Catu declared.
Major General Jose Vladimir Cagara, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, issued a separate statement praising the achievement as a milestone for regional security. "The successful surrender of weapons is a major achievement for our security. The cooperation of local governments, as well as the cooperation of the citizens, serves as an inspiration to other communities," Cagara noted.
Continued Campaign for Peace in Central Mindanao
Major General Cagara further urged other individuals still holding illegal firearms to follow the example set by the Datu Anggal Midtimbang residents. "We continue to call on those who still hold illegal weapons to surrender them to our government to ensure a safer and more orderly Central Mindanao," he added.
This initiative forms part of a broader, sustained campaign led by the Philippine Army and various government agencies to combat the proliferation of illegal weapons and maintain peace and order throughout Central Mindanao. The SALW management program continues to gain momentum as more communities recognize the benefits of voluntary disarmament for long-term stability and safety.
