Six Manila Police Officers Arrested for Armed Robbery in Makati City

In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns about police integrity, six Manila police officers were arrested for their alleged involvement in an armed robbery in Makati City. The arrests occurred following a hot pursuit operation, with the suspects positively identified by the victims.

Details of the Robbery Incident

The armed robbery took place along Arsonvel Street in Barangay San Isidro, Makati City. According to reports from the Makati City police, the victims—a man and two women—had traveled from Malate to Makati to retrieve personal belongings when they were confronted by armed men. At gunpoint, the perpetrators stole cash, cellphones, and other valuables before fleeing the scene.

Suspects and Immediate Actions

The arrested suspects include a police staff sergeant and five patrolmen, all members of the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Malate Police Station 9. In response to the incident, National Capital Region Police Office Director Major General Anthony Aberin ordered the immediate relief of the suspects and the Malate Police Station commander, citing command responsibility pending a thorough investigation.

PNP Chief's Strong Response

Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the Makati City police for their swift action in apprehending the erring officers. He assured the public that the PNP will not tolerate any form of lawlessness within its ranks. "I will personally monitor the progress of this case to make sure that these policemen will not only be dismissed from the service but also go straight to jail," Nartatez stated. "Criminal-minded policemen do not deserve to wear the uniform and use our badge."

Legal and Administrative Proceedings

The PNP’s Internal Affairs Service has already initiated administrative cases that could lead to the dismissal of the involved officers from the Manila Police District. Simultaneously, the Makati Police are preparing criminal charges against the suspects. Nartatez has directed investigating teams to build a solid case and ensure the victims receive protection if necessary.

Commitment to Reform and Integrity

Emphasizing the importance of internal cleansing, Nartatez highlighted the PNP's ongoing reform programs focused on professionalism, discipline, and integrity. "We will strengthen morale and welfare because discipline and motivation are operational necessities, not privileges," he said. "Policing must be firm, fair and anchored on integrity. These are not slogans, these are standards." He added that professionalism, discipline, and integrity are expected, not optional, in the police force.
