Philippine Navy Denies Marines Among Alleged Bagmen in P805-B Kickback Case
The Philippine Navy has issued a strong denial regarding the alleged involvement of its personnel in a massive kickback scandal. Navy spokesperson Captain Marissa Arlene Martinez clarified that four of the eighteen individuals presented as supposed bagmen in a press conference are not members of the Philippine Navy or the Philippine Marine Corps.
Official Records Dispute Allegations
In an official statement, Captain Martinez emphasized that based on verified service records, the four individuals in question have never been part of the Philippine Navy organization. The Navy conducted thorough verification of identities and service histories before making this definitive announcement.
The majority of those presented were reportedly discharged dishonorably from service, while others retired with good standing. However, the Navy maintains that the specific individuals identified in the press conference have no legitimate connection to their organization.
Retired Personnel Clarification
Regarding one individual named Orly Guteza, Captain Martinez provided additional context. Guteza retired from service back in June 2020 and is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Philippine Navy. This distinction is crucial in understanding the Navy's position on the matter.
Call for Verification and Caution
The Philippine Navy has issued a public advisory urging citizens to verify information credibility before sharing or believing allegations. They specifically recommend checking sources and platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Captain Martinez reaffirmed the Navy's commitment to professionalism, stating: "The Navy remains a disciplined and non-partisan organization whose integrity and reputation cannot be compromised. We continue our unwavering mandate to defend national sovereignty and serve the Filipino people."
Armed Forces Response
From the broader military perspective, Colonel Xerxers Trinidad, Chief of the AFP Public Affairs Office, emphasized that statements made in public forums should undergo proper legal and investigative processes. This underscores the military's commitment to due process and factual verification.
The allegations involve claims that bagmen delivered P805 billion in kickbacks to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, and former Congressman Zaldy Co. The Navy's denial represents the first official military response to these serious accusations.
