Navy Seizes P197.2 Million in Smuggled Cigarettes in Western Mindanao Operations

Authorities from the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) have confiscated an estimated P197.2 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during a two-day enforcement operation within their jurisdiction, as confirmed by officials on Wednesday, February 26, 2026. This significant seizure underscores ongoing efforts to combat illicit trade in the region.

Breakdown of the Seizures

The total confiscation includes P171 million worth of foreign-brand smuggled cigarettes seized on Tuesday, February 24, and an additional P26.2 million intercepted on Wednesday, February 25. Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr., commander of WMNC, detailed the operations, highlighting the navy's proactive measures against smuggling activities.

First Interception: M/V Sun Voyage

On Tuesday, February 24, navy personnel operating under Naval Task Force (NTF)-61 intercepted the vessel M/V Sun Voyage off the coast of Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat. Upon boarding and inspection, the vessel was found carrying 3,000 master cases of imported cigarettes, with an estimated value of P171 million. The seizure occurred after the vessel's skipper failed to present necessary importation permits and cargo clearances, leading to the escort of the vessel, crew, and cargo to the WMNC headquarters in Calarian, Zamboanga City.

Second Interception: M/B Skyblue

Early Wednesday, February 25, the Navy intercepted another vessel, the motorboat M/B Skyblue, southeast of Sibago Island in Basilan province. Inspection revealed 460 master cases of foreign-brand cigarettes worth P26.2 million. Similar to the first case, the boat captain and crew were unable to provide valid documentation for the vessel and its cargo. The motorboat, along with its crew and cargo, was transported to the Majini pier of the WMNC in Zamboanga City.

Legal and Operational Context

Rear Admiral Reyes emphasized that both operations were conducted in strict adherence to established maritime law enforcement protocols and relevant national laws targeting smuggling and illegal trade. These actions reflect the Navy's commitment to upholding security and economic regulations in Western Mindanao, aiming to deter future illicit activities and protect local markets from unauthorized goods.
