The National Capital Region (NCR) will be placed under full alert status starting Monday, coinciding with the start of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) chief PMGen. Anthony Aberin confirmed the escalation from the current heightened alert status, following three days of protest actions by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC).
Peaceful INC protests despite initial tension
According to the NCRPO, the INC gatherings were generally peaceful despite tension recorded on the first day of the rally at the EDSA People Power Monument. No serious incidents or accidents were reported when the protest was moved to Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila.
6,000 police officers to secure Senate
The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that all security preparations for the Vice President's impeachment trial are in place. Around 6,000 police officers will be deployed around the Senate to ensure order and security during the opening of the trial. PNP Public Information Office chief PCol. Allen Rae Co stated that PNP chief PGen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered all police personnel to remain disciplined, impartial, and focused on public service.
Nartatez emphasized that the alert status elevation is part of the police's ongoing assessment to ensure sufficient security measures while respecting the rights of citizens.
