Cebu Police Deploy Over 800 Officers for Simbang Gabi Security
Over 800 Police Secure Cebu's Simbang Gabi, Misa de Gallo

The police forces of Cebu City and Mandaue City are now on full alert, implementing tight security measures for the traditional Simbang Gabi and the nine-day Misa de Gallo celebrations starting Tuesday, December 16, 2025.

Massive Police Deployment Across Cebu Churches

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has mobilized 574 police officers and force multipliers to be stationed at all Catholic churches in the city. The deployment began as early as 3:00 AM on Tuesday. According to CCPO Information Officer Police Lieutenant Colonel Jose Losbaños, the deployment strategy prioritizes churches with high expected attendance, including smaller chapels. Each church will have a police assistance desk.

Security operations extend beyond church interiors. Perimeter security personnel will be stationed outside, and the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) will coordinate to maintain smooth traffic flow. Police mobile patrol units will also conduct roving operations within barangays to prevent theft and other crimes.

Heightened Alert and Inter-Agency Coordination

The entire Central Visayas region is under a heightened alert status. This means no police personnel are allowed to be absent or go on leave during this period. The police are coordinating with other agencies like the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

As part of the preparedness measures, an ambulance and firefighters will be on standby at every church. Lieutenant Colonel Losbaños urged the public to secure their homes before leaving for mass and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

Mandaue City's Comprehensive Security Plan

Similarly, the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) has reinforced its security deployment to ensure public safety throughout the Christmas season. MCPO Spokesperson Police Lieutenant Colonel Mercy Villaro stated that police personnel were deployed starting the first night of Simbang Gabi, and operations will continue until Christmas and New Year's Day.

Security is assured for at least ten major churches and gymnasiums being used as alternative venues for the early morning masses. The security coverage has also been expanded to include malls, public markets, and other areas expecting large crowds.

Mandaue City has deployed more than 300 police officers, with additional officers on standby for reinforcement. Villaro emphasized that despite the holiday season, police alertness remains high, and regular patrol and roaming operations will continue unabated.
