Police Apprehend Three Suspects, Confiscate P6.4 Million in Smuggled Cigarettes in Lanao del Sur
In a significant crackdown on illicit trade, police forces have arrested three individuals and seized approximately P6.4 million worth of smuggled cigarettes during separate law enforcement operations in Picong, Lanao del Sur. The operations, conducted on February 3 and 5, 2026, highlight ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and transnational crimes in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.
Major Seizure in Miculabo Village
According to Police Brigadier General Jaysen De Guzman, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), the bulk of the confiscated contraband, valued at P6 million, was intercepted on Thursday, February 5, 2026, in Miculabo village, Picong. The police, operating an anti-criminality checkpoint in coordination with the Bureau of Customs, stopped a truck for inspection.
During the examination, officers discovered concealed compartments within the vehicle, leading to the seizure of 141 master cases of smuggled cigarettes. Two individuals were arrested in connection with this incident, and the contraband was promptly confiscated as part of the operation.
Earlier Operation in Tual Village
In a related operation on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, law enforcement authorities conducted another anti-criminality checkpoint in Tual village, Picong. Police flagged down a vehicle after the driver exhibited hesitation to stop at the checkpoint. A visual inspection, carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures, revealed approximately 250 reams of assorted smuggled cigarettes in plain view, with an estimated value of P427,840.
The driver, identified as a resident of Makilala, North Cotabato, was arrested and is currently under police custody. The seized smuggled cigarettes from this operation will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and further investigation.
