PNP Launches Investigation into Death of Police Lieutenant Colonel in Davao City Camp

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated a thorough investigation into the untimely death of a police officer discovered inside his living quarters at Camp Sgt. Quintin M. Merecido, located in the Buhangin district of Davao City. This incident has raised significant concerns within the law enforcement community and the local area.

Details of the Incident and Official Statements

During a recent press conference, Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño, chief of the PNP Public Information Office (PIO), provided initial details about the case. The deceased has been identified as Lieutenant Colonel Deosar Almasa, who served as the chief of the Davao Regional Police Office Logistics Services Division. His body was found hours before the scheduled arrival of PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. for a command visit at the camp.

Authorities reported that a firearm was located beside Almasa's body, adding a critical element to the ongoing inquiry. General Tuaño emphasized that investigators are meticulously examining all possible angles to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death. "We cannot yet say for sure whether there was foul play or not," he stated, highlighting the preliminary nature of the probe.

Work-Related Angles Under Scrutiny

In his remarks, General Tuaño revealed that one primary focus of the investigation is related to Almasa's professional responsibilities. He noted that the lieutenant colonel had expressed concerns about inheriting reports that he could not reconcile, which might have contributed to work-related stress. "His only concern is related to his work, as he inherited reports that he could not reconcile. But this is just one of the angles being looked into by our investigators," Tuaño explained.

He further clarified that, aside from this aspect, the Regional Police Office 11 (PRO-11) investigators are primarily concentrating on work-related factors. "Aside from that, the angle being examined by PRO-11 investigators is purely work-related," he added, suggesting that personal or external motives are not the immediate focus, though they remain under consideration as part of a comprehensive review.

Condolences and Ongoing Developments

The PNP has extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family of Lieutenant Colonel Almasa, acknowledging the loss within their ranks. As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to release more information to clarify the events leading to his death. The community and fellow officers await further updates, hoping for a resolution that provides clarity and justice.

This case underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel and the importance of thorough investigations in such sensitive matters. The PNP remains committed to uncovering the truth behind this tragic incident in Davao City.
