PNP Probes Local Terror Group in Ambush Killing Five Cops

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the possible involvement of a local terrorist group (LTG) in a brutal ambush that occurred over the weekend in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur. The attack resulted in the tragic deaths of five police officers and left three others injured.

Retaliatory Attack Suspected

During a press conference on Monday, March 30, 2026, PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño revealed that investigators are treating the incident as a likely "retaliatory attack" by an LTG. While he declined to publicly identify the specific group at this stage, Tuaño stated, "This is possibly a retaliatory attack against our government troops in connection with recent accomplishments against the group."

Background of Recent Operations

Tuaño provided context by citing the arrest of several members of the group in operations conducted by the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) from October 2025 to February 2026. These successful law enforcement actions are believed to have motivated the violent retaliation.

Details of the Ambush

The ambush took place on the evening of March 28, 2026. Eight policemen, all members of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company, were returning to their detachment after conducting routine patrol and police visibility operations. While traveling in a police vehicle, they were suddenly attacked by unidentified gunmen. Five officers were killed instantly at the scene, while the three survivors sustained injuries. Tuaño confirmed that the injured personnel are now out of danger and receiving appropriate medical care.

Administrative Review Ordered

In response to the attack, PNP Chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez has ordered not only immediate hot pursuit operations against the perpetrators but also a thorough assessment of potential administrative lapses. Tuaño explained, "The PNP chief gave instructions because the area was very dark. They are looking into possible administrative lapses on the part of the provincial director as to why the area remained poorly lit and without a detachment." This review aims to address security vulnerabilities and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

PNP Chief's Strong Condemnation

During a flag-raising ceremony at Camp Crame on March 30, General Nartatez led a moment of silence and prayers for the fallen officers. He delivered a powerful statement condemning the attack, saying, "This is not just an attack on our people but an attack on peace and order and a direct affront to the rule of law. Such violence has no place in our community. We will not retreat, we will not be intimidated. The PNP will not stop until those responsible are held accountable."

Nartatez also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring them, "To the families of our fallen heroes, we extend our deepest condolences in your time of grief. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten and it will not be in vain. No words will ever be enough but you have our commitment. The PNP will not abandon your family."

The PNP remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, with ongoing investigations and operations focused on identifying and apprehending all individuals involved in this heinous act of violence against law enforcement personnel.
