Central Visayas Police Heighten Security for 40th Edsa Revolution Anniversary
Police forces in Central Visayas have been placed on high alert in preparation for the 40th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution, scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This significant event commemorates the historic peaceful uprising that reshaped Philippine politics in 1986.
Comprehensive Security Measures Deployed
Under the directives of Philippine National Police Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan, head of Police Regional Office 7 (PRO 7), has confirmed that extensive security preparations are fully operational. A total of 3,400 police personnel have been strategically deployed across Central Visayas to monitor and manage activities associated with the anniversary.
Authorities are specifically focused on gatherings organized as part of the Trillion Peso March, which will involve participation from the Church, various cause-oriented groups, and other organizations. These assemblies aim to voice concerns over alleged misuse of government funds, prompting police to implement tight security along major roads and critical infrastructure throughout the region.
Ensuring Peaceful Celebrations and Public Safety
In addition to uniformed officers, PRO 7 is actively coordinating with local government units, force multipliers, and other stakeholders to foster a peaceful environment for the anniversary events. Police Colonel George Ylanan, chief of police in Cebu City, expressed confidence that the activities will proceed without disturbances, citing the historical precedent of peaceful protests by progressive groups in the area.
Maranan emphasized the police's commitment to upholding constitutional rights, stating, "We fully respect the right of our people to peacefully assemble and express their views. At the same time, we strongly encourage those planning to participate in public assemblies to comply with existing laws and procedures, particularly in securing the necessary permits from local authorities." This approach aims to balance freedom of expression with the safety and security of all participants and the general public.
Proactive Measures and Community Cooperation
Ylanan highlighted the importance of obtaining necessary permits and maintaining peaceful conduct, noting that security will be provided for Trillion Peso March participants, with police assisting traffic enforcers to ensure smooth vehicle flow. While no specific security threats have been identified related to the Edsa anniversary activities, police have elevated alert levels as a precautionary measure to prevent any untoward incidents.
