BACOLOD. The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) is ramping up security protocols to guarantee a secure, tranquil, and organized commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution throughout the region on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
Proactive Security Deployments
Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, chief of the PRO-NIR Public Information Office, disclosed that Brigadier General Arnold Thomas Ibay, the regional director, has issued directives to all provincial directors, police chiefs, and force commanders. They are tasked with implementing proactive security strategies, especially in key convergence zones such as public plazas, churches, major roads, transport terminals, and sites hosting commemorative events.
Enhanced Police Presence and Coordination
Malong emphasized that security efforts will feature heightened police visibility, including extensive foot and mobile patrols. Additionally, police assistance desks will be established to provide support. Close collaboration with local government units, event organizers, and partner agencies is a cornerstone of these measures to ensure seamless operations.
Continuous Intelligence Monitoring
To preempt any potential security risks, PRO-NIR is conducting ongoing intelligence monitoring and threat assessments. Malong highlighted that this vigilant approach aims to safeguard the public and maintain order during the anniversary observances.
Honoring a Historic Legacy
Malong reflected on the significance of the Edsa People Power Revolution, which occurred in February 1986, noting it as a pivotal moment in Philippine history that embodies unity, democracy, and the collective power of the Filipino people.
Brigadier General Ibay affirmed, "We honor the spirit of Edsa by ensuring that the rights of our people to peacefully assemble and commemorate this historic event are protected, while maintaining public safety and order."
Public Vigilance Encouraged
The regional director also called on the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via established hotline numbers. This community involvement is seen as vital to enhancing overall security.
Ibay reiterated PRO-NIR's dedication to upholding democratic principles, protecting communities, and ensuring that the 2026 Edsa anniversary observance is conducted in a solemn, meaningful, and secure manner for all participants.
