Top 4 Drug Suspect Recaptured in Davao City After Dramatic Escape
Police authorities in Davao City have successfully recaptured a detainee classified as a Top 4 City-Level High-Value Individual in illegal drugs cases, just days after his early-morning escape from custody. The escapee, identified as Alfred Ismael Magallanes Matute, also known as "Doy-Doy," was apprehended on Monday evening, February 9, 2026, in Laverna, Buhangin, Davao City.
Intensified Manhunt Leads to Recapture
According to the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Matute's recapture followed an intensified citywide manhunt operation initiated shortly after his escape from the DCPO Custodial Facility on February 5, 2026. The operation was conducted by the Special Operations Group (SOG) and the City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU), who acted on intelligence provided by an informant regarding the suspect's possible hideout.
Authorities confirmed that Matute's identity was positively established upon arrest, and he voluntarily cooperated with law enforcement officers. He has since been returned to detention, where he has been held since December 21, 2025, facing charges for violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Details of the Escape Incident
Earlier, DCPO Acting City Director Police Colonel Mannan Muarip disclosed during a press conference on February 6 that Matute managed to escape at around 2:00 a.m. on February 5, although the incident was only discovered later during the morning headcount. CCTV footage revealed that Matute hid inside his cell before climbing to the second floor, using a staircase to exit through the front of the facility.
He then fled via a nearby construction site that was not covered by cameras.
Ongoing Investigation and Accountability
Police officials have stated that an internal investigation is ongoing to determine accountability surrounding the escape incident. This probe aims to identify any lapses in security protocols and ensure that similar breaches do not occur in the future. The swift recapture of Matute highlights the effectiveness of coordinated police efforts in Davao City, but it also raises questions about custodial facility security.
The 35-year-old suspect remains in custody as legal proceedings continue, with authorities emphasizing their commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the law in the region.
