Government Troops Seize High-Powered Firearm and Equipment After Clash with DI-MG in Lanao del Sur
In a significant development, government forces have successfully seized a high-powered firearm, five backpacks, and various personal effects following an encounter with members of the Dawlah Islamiya–Maute Group (DI-MG) in Lanao del Sur. The military confirmed this operation on Thursday, January 29, 2026, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance security in the region.
Details of the Clash and Recovery
Major General Yegor Rey Barroquillo Jr., commander of the 1st Infantry Division (1ID), reported that the clash occurred on Thursday, January 29, in Sitio Lumaog, Udalo village, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur. The engagement began when troops from the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade made contact with DI-MG elements, leading to a brief firefight.
Following the exchange, the DI-MG members retreated, and no casualties or losses were reported on the side of the operating troops. In the aftermath, the military recovered one M14 rifle, five backpacks, and assorted personal effects that were abandoned by the retreating group.
Context and Military Response
This focused military operation is part of intensified security and pursuit efforts being conducted by the 1ID. These efforts are a direct response to a recent attack against government forces in Lininding, Munai, Lanao del Norte, which occurred on Friday, January 23. In that incident, four soldiers were killed and another was wounded when DI-MG members ambushed them around 10 a.m. while the troops were on their way to purchase provisions.
Major General Barroquillo emphasized the connection between these operations and the military's commitment to justice. "These operations are directly linked to our commitment to pursue those responsible for the recent attack against our troops," he stated. "We will not relent in our efforts to seek justice for our fallen heroes and to deny terrorist groups any space to operate."
Ongoing Operations and Community Safety
Barroquillo assured that troops will continue decisive and sustained operations to protect communities and preserve peace and security in the area. He noted that close coordination with local government units and other stakeholders remains in place, ensuring that all military actions are conducted with the utmost regard for civilian safety.
Currently, troops are actively tracking down the retreating DI-MG members as part of broader efforts to neutralize remaining threat groups in Lanao del Sur and surrounding regions. This operation underscores the military's proactive stance in maintaining stability and preventing further attacks.
