Military Facilitates Surrender of Weapons Cache in Lanao del Sur

In a significant development for peace and security in the region, the 101st Infantry Brigade (101Bde), in collaboration with the 64th Infantry Battalion and partner law enforcement agencies, has successfully facilitated the voluntary surrender of a substantial cache of firearms and explosives in Lanao del Sur. This event, which occurred on Saturday, February 7, marks a positive step toward reducing violence and fostering stability in the area.

Details of the Surrender Operation

The surrender took place in Matalin village, Malabang, Lanao del Sur, where eight individuals, whose identities have not been disclosed by the military, turned over a variety of weapons. According to Brigadier General Yasser Bara, commander of the 101Bde, the surrendered items include:

  • One rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher
  • Three KG9 9-millimeter submachine guns
  • Three Garand rifles
  • 80 hand grenades
  • Two anti-tank RPG ammunition

This cache represents a significant reduction in the tools of violence available in the community, as emphasized by General Bara in a statement released on Sunday, February 8.

Factors Behind the Successful Surrender

General Bara attributed the successful surrender to a combination of factors that have been instrumental in building trust and encouraging individuals to choose peace. These include:

  1. Sustained community engagement efforts by military and law enforcement agencies
  2. Intensified security operations aimed at maintaining order and safety
  3. Growing trust among local residents in government initiatives focused on peace and stability

He highlighted that this act of surrender reflects courage—the courage to change, protect one’s family, and embrace a peaceful future. “The 101st Brigade stands ready to support all who choose to lay down their arms and help build a more secure and hopeful future,” Bara stated, underscoring the military’s commitment to supporting reintegration and peace-building efforts.

Ongoing Commitment to Peace and Security

The 101st Infantry Brigade remains dedicated to its mandate of protecting the people and securing communities in Lanao del Sur and neighboring areas. General Bara reiterated that they will continue to uphold this responsibility while assisting individuals who opt for the path of peace. This surrender is seen as a testament to the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between the military, law enforcement, and local communities in promoting long-term stability and reducing the threat of violence in the region.
