Marcos Confirms ASEAN Summit Proceeds Despite Middle East Tensions

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has firmly stated that the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Leaders' Summit and Related Summits will proceed as scheduled in Cebu from May 8 to 9, 2026. This announcement was made during a press briefing in Silang, Cavite on Friday, March 27, 2026, where Marcos emphasized the importance of moving forward despite the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

Consultations Lead to Consensus

Marcos revealed that the decision to proceed with the summit followed extensive consultations with leaders from the other ten ASEAN member-states. He posed a straightforward question to his counterparts: "Would you prefer to postpone the ASEAN Summit due to the busy schedules caused by the oil crisis and war in the Middle East?" The consensus reached was clear and decisive.

"It is precisely now that we must coordinate our efforts," Marcos declared, highlighting the urgency of collective action. He added in Filipino, "Ipapatuloy natin 'yung ASEAN Summit," reinforcing the commitment to continue with the event.

Focus on Critical Issues

The President described the upcoming summit as "very bare bones," with a sharp focus on three main subjects:

  • Oil and petroleum products supply
  • Food supply and pricing
  • Migrant worker issues

Marcos stressed that these topics are crucial for ASEAN leaders to address, as they will help determine future actions, collaborative strategies for the rest of the year, and a unified ASEAN position in response to external shocks. "How can we help each other, and what is the ASEAN position regarding all of these shocks that are coming our way?" he questioned, underscoring the summit's strategic importance.

Future Summits and Hosting Commitments

Looking ahead, Marcos noted that the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, scheduled for November 10 to 12 in Pasay City, will "tentatively" push through. This event is deemed significant as it is expected to attract other world leaders, making it a key diplomatic engagement.

As part of the Philippines' chairship of ASEAN in 2026, the country is hosting 650 ministerial and senior official meetings, showcasing its leadership role in the region.

Senate Proposals and Economic Considerations

Despite the confirmation, Senate leaders had previously expressed support for postponing the Philippines' hosting of this year's ASEAN Summit. Their concerns centered on economic pressures stemming from the Middle East conflict and soaring oil prices.

The proposed postponement was seen as a measure to help the government save over PHP17 billion. Senators suggested reallocating funds originally intended for the summit to mitigate the economic impacts of the Middle East tensions, reflecting a cautious approach to fiscal management during uncertain times.

However, Marcos' announcement indicates a prioritization of regional cooperation and dialogue, even in the face of global challenges, affirming ASEAN's resilience and commitment to collective problem-solving.
