Chinese Naval Vessels Observed Shadowing Multilateral Maritime Drills in West Philippine Sea
Two Chinese warships were observed conducting shadowing operations during a maritime exercise involving the Philippines, the United States, and Australia near Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea on Monday, February 16. According to BRP Teresa Magbanua Executive Officer Captain Adrian Vargas, the vessels from the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) suddenly appeared but remained outside the designated "operation box," the specified oceanic area for the naval training activities.
No Interference Reported During Drills
Despite the presence of the Chinese ships, the fourteenth Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA) in the West Philippine Sea proceeded smoothly without any interference. No radio challenges were recorded, and the Chinese warships merely monitored the ongoing maritime drills. Captain Vargas suggested that China might have been exercising its freedom of navigation, which could explain why no radio challenges were issued, as the vessels did not disrupt the training exercises.
Details of the Maritime Cooperative Activity
The maritime drills included a range of training exercises such as:
- Communication Exercise
- Maritime Domain Awareness
- Joint Patrol
- Division Tactics
- Photo Exercise

Four surface assets were deployed for the activity, including the Philippine Coast Guard's flagship vessel BRP Teresa Magbanua, the Philippine Navy's BRP Diego Silang, the United States' USS Dewey, and Australia's HMAS Toowoomba, along with air assets from all three countries.
Successful Completion of Exercises
