DFA Emphasizes Multi-Agency Coordination in Zaldy Co Repatriation Efforts
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has firmly clarified that ensuring the return to the Philippines of former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co is not solely its responsibility. This statement comes after Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla identified the DFA as the lead agency in handling Co's repatriation. Co, who is wanted for alleged involvement in a flood control scandal, has been hiding abroad for several months.
Whole-of-Government Approach Required
According to DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona, the arrest and repatriation of Zaldy Co necessitate coordination among various law enforcement and judicial authorities, including the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). Escalona described this as a "whole-of-government approach" that does not depend exclusively on the DFA. The department underscored its commitment to supporting the rule of law and its readiness to provide diplomatic assistance in line with its mandate.
Public Assistance Sought
In addition to highlighting the collaborative effort needed, the DFA has called on the public to provide any information regarding Co's possible whereabouts. This appeal aims to aid in the ongoing investigation and facilitate his eventual return to face charges related to the scandal.
