Kalayaan 16 Municipal Officials Honored as Modern-Day Heroes in West Philippine Sea Standoff

In a powerful display of national pride, the Kalayaan 16 have been celebrated as contemporary heroes for their unwavering defense of Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea. These officials from the remote Municipality of Kalayaan have demonstrated that ordinary Filipinos are at the forefront of protecting the nation's maritime territories against external aggression.

Extraordinary Courage in the Face of Imperial Power

It requires remarkable bravery for a smaller nation like the Philippines to confront a global power such as China. The fact that a distant municipality like Kalayaan serves as the vanguard against Beijing's expansionist moves is truly heroic. While some individuals, referred to as 'Tsinadors,' echo Chinese propaganda, the Kalayaan 16 are making history through their courageous actions.

Recent years have seen a significant and one-sided escalation of tensions in the West Philippine Sea. Chinese forces have employed water cannons against Philippine civilian vessels, rammed boats, deployed troll networks to spread misinformation, and targeted Filipino public officials. Even more concerning are consistent reports of Beijing interfering in domestic Philippine affairs, including controversies surrounding figures like Alice Guo and the so-called 'Tsinadors.'

Sovereign Assertion and Retaliatory Ban

In a principled stand for sovereignty, the Municipality of Kalayaan declared China's Ambassador to the Philippines persona non grata following repeated attacks by the Chinese Embassy against Filipino officials. In response, the Chinese government imposed an entry ban on 16 Kalayaan officials, now known as the Kalayaan 16.

For this act of bravery, Akbayan proudly honors the Kalayaan 16 with the West Philippine Sea Heroes Award, recognizing those who defend the nation amid ongoing tensions with China. The award recipients include Mayor Beltzasar S. Alindogan, Vice Mayor Maurice Phillip Alexis S. Albayda, Councilors Nonelon B. Balbontin, Nonie C. Gapuz, Roberto M. Asiado, Hubert B. Llavan, Francis P. Polizon, Marilou S. Vales, Monico A. Abogado, Eugenio Bito-onon Jr., and Hermoso A. Ornopia, along with municipal officials Tracylie Shierjun R. Malabayabas, Arzel E. Belidan, Vicencio R. Milan, Allan D. Dellos, and Mary Cristina J. Lagrosa.

China's Ban Backfires as Recognition of Sovereignty

Ironically, China's retaliatory ban has strengthened Philippine resolve rather than intimidated officials. While China prohibits Filipinos from entering its territory, Chinese vessels continue to trespass in Philippine seas and islands. The ban has become a badge of honor, with defending maritime rights against a superpower being a source of national pride.

Furthermore, China's action effectively acknowledges the authority of the Municipality of Kalayaan as an official Philippine government unit. By responding to a local resolution with state-level retaliation, Beijing has implicitly recognized what it seeks to undermine: that Kalayaan is sovereign Philippine territory governed by legitimate Filipino officials.

Calls for Decisive National Action and Legislative Support

The courage of the Kalayaan 16 must be supported by decisive national measures. The Department of Foreign Affairs should move beyond closed-door diplomacy and stop dismissing concerned citizens as 'casual commentators.' Instead, it should emulate the bravery of ordinary Filipinos and firmly assert sovereign rights while protecting people from Chinese aggression.

Congress must urgently pass pending West Philippine Sea bills to mandate education on maritime issues, institutionalize protection of territorial waters, and strengthen frontline communities through additional budget allocations, particularly for Kalayaan residents.

Upcoming Missions and Continued Advocacy

This summer, Atin Ito and Akbayan Party will conduct another mission to the West Philippine Sea to demonstrate that the Philippines will not surrender the Kalayaan Island Groups or any part of its maritime territory. Together with congressional allies, they will continue exposing China's illegal activities and celebrating Filipino heroism against bullying.
