Kalayaan Island Officials Receive Recognition for Sovereignty Defense
In a significant show of support, the Akbayan party-list and the Atin Ito coalition have honored a group of local officials from Kalayaan, Palawan, referred to as the "Kalayaan 16." This recognition comes after China imposed a travel ban on these officials, preventing them from traveling to their own country. The ban was enacted in response to the Kalayaan Municipal Council declaring former and current Chinese ambassadors to Manila as persona non grata within their jurisdiction.
Award Ceremony Highlights Courageous Stand
On Tuesday morning, the Akbayan and Atin Ito groups presented the West Philippine Sea Heroes Award to the Kalayaan officials, acknowledging their brave and unwavering stance. Leaders from Akbayan emphasized that the "Kalayaan 16" symbolize courage and a steadfast defense of Philippine sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea. This award underscores the importance of local governance in national territorial disputes.
Resilience Amidst Challenges
Despite the travel restrictions, the local officials remain determined to advocate for the country's rights in the West Philippine Sea. Over 300 residents continue to live on Pag-asa Island, strengthening the Philippine presence in this contested area. Their resilience highlights the ongoing efforts to maintain sovereignty and community in the face of external pressures.
Voices from the Ground
Kalayaan Vice Mayor Maurice Phillip Alexis Albayda expressed that this recognition makes them feel prouder to be Filipino and more committed to defending the nation's rightful claims against foreign interference. His statement reflects the deep-seated patriotism and resolve among the officials and residents, reinforcing the importance of local action in global territorial issues.
