The National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA) has officially published the administrative map of the Philippines, which prominently features the West Philippine Sea (WPS). This significant release underscores the country's commitment to asserting and protecting its maritime jurisdiction in this strategically important region.
Reinforcing Maritime Claims Through Official Documentation
According to a statement from NAMRIA, official maps and nautical charts play a crucial role in asserting and safeguarding the Philippines' maritime jurisdiction in the West Philippine Sea. Since 2012, during the Aquino administration, the government has formally adopted the term "West Philippine Sea" in its publications, consistently incorporating it into all official maps and charts.
Practical Applications and International Standards
The agency explained that these materials are utilized by mariners, planners, researchers, and various institutions both domestically and internationally for navigation, geographic information, and maritime safety. NAMRIA emphasized that its nautical charts adhere to international hydrographic standards and are submitted to international technical bodies such as the International Hydrographic Organization. This ensures that Philippine data is included in the global maritime record.
Legal Framework and Geographic Precision
Simultaneously, NAMRIA highlighted that the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) extends up to 200 nautical miles from the archipelagic baselines, in accordance with Republic Act 9522. The data is based on precise geospatial information that aids in accurately determining maritime limits.
Supporting National Sovereignty and Resource Management
NAMRIA clarified that its mandate is to provide accurate and reliable geospatial information for the nation, which is essential for maritime safety, environmental management, disaster preparedness, and the documentation of national territory. The agency added that it will continue to defend this mandate in support of national sovereignty and the proper management of the country's resources.
