Philippines and Netherlands Commemorate 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations

While global attention is fixed on The Hague this week due to the confirmation of charges hearing against former President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC), where he is currently detained, the proceedings will determine if there is sufficient evidence to proceed to trial regarding the thousands of killings under his drug war. Known as a hub of global justice, The Hague hosts the ICC, International Court of Justice, and Permanent Court of Arbitration. It was also here that the 2016 arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines against China in a maritime dispute was issued.

Beyond Legal Matters: A Deepening Bilateral Relationship

However, the relationship between the Philippines and the Netherlands extends far beyond legal issues. According to Philippine Ambassador Eduardo Malaya, this year marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. Recently, Netherlands Minister of Trade and Development Aukje de Vries visited Manila to strengthen economic cooperation. They discussed projects related to water management, semiconductor manufacturing, healthcare, and ASEAN regional priorities.

In this way, the dual facets of the Philippines-Netherlands relationship are simultaneously highlighted: the focus on justice at the ICC and the ongoing deepening of economic and cultural ties. This anniversary underscores a partnership that balances legal accountability with collaborative growth, reflecting a multifaceted engagement that has evolved over seven and a half decades.
