In a significant address at the United Nations General Assembly, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared the Philippines' preparedness to broaden its cooperative efforts with other nations, with a special focus on countries within the Global South. This move underscores the nation's commitment to fostering stronger international ties and contributing to global development.
Sharing Expertise for Global Progress
President Marcos emphasized that the Philippines is poised to share its valuable experiences in key areas such as healthcare education, migration governance, and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This initiative aims to assist other countries, particularly Small Island Developing States, Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and nations across Africa. By leveraging its own developmental insights, the Philippines seeks to play a pivotal role in addressing shared challenges and promoting sustainable growth worldwide.
Advocacy for Middle-Income Nations
As an active member of the G-77 and China, the Philippines aligns itself with critical global issues, including financing for development, food and water security, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Furthermore, President Marcos highlighted the country's leadership role as chair of the Like-Minded Group of Middle Income Countries. He stressed the need for the UN Development System to better address the unique requirements of middle-income countries, which encompass a significant portion of the global population and many of the world's impoverished communities.
Support for African Reforms
In a show of solidarity, President Marcos expressed the Philippines' support for African nations' calls to reform global governance structures. This includes advocating for a permanent African representative on the United Nations Security Council. He noted that as fellow developing countries, the Philippines stands united with Africa in amplifying its voice to transform multilateral institutions, making them more relevant and effective in addressing the realities of the 21st century.
This announcement marks a proactive step by the Philippines in enhancing its diplomatic engagements and contributing to a more equitable global framework, reflecting its growing role on the international stage.
