Historic Peace Agreement Ends Decades-Long Clan Feud in Sulu Town
In a landmark development for community harmony, two warring clans in the municipality of Talipao, Sulu, have formally inked a peace pact, bringing an end to a protracted and bitter land dispute that had simmered for years. The successful resolution was facilitated through a concerted and collaborative effort involving multiple key stakeholders, demonstrating a unified approach to conflict resolution.
Military and MNLF Collaboration Paves the Way for Settlement
The 1103rd Infantry Brigade, working in close partnership with the 41st Infantry Battalion, local police forces, the Talipao Municipal Government, and the Moro National Liberation Front, played a pivotal role in orchestrating the peaceful settlement. This multi-agency cooperation ensured that the process remained inclusive, transparent, and firmly rooted in community-centered principles, addressing the deep-seated issues that had fueled the conflict.
The feud centered on a contentious parcel of land situated between Barangay Tiis and Barangay Talipao Proper. One faction was led by Abdulgani Jainal from Tiis village, while the opposing group was headed by Ashraf Jimlan from Talipao Proper village. Notably, both clans have relatives who are active members of the MNLF, adding a layer of complexity to the dispute.
Legal Verdict and Community Reconciliation
A decisive and historic meeting held last week at the Sangguniang Bayan Hall of Talipao, presided over by Vice Mayor Nivocadnezar Tulawie, proved to be the breakthrough moment. During this conference, the official verdict on the land dispute was formally presented to all concerned parties. The ruling, issued after thorough coordination with the Registry of Deeds and the Office of the Governor, unequivocally affirmed that the contested land belongs to Barangay Talipao Proper, with the Jimlani family recognized as the rightful owners.
"The decision was publicly read before all concerned parties, ensuring transparency and due process," emphasized the 1103rd Infantry Brigade in an official statement. Vice Mayor Tulawie underscored that the verdict, grounded in legal documentation and established procedures, must be accepted with dignity, unity, and maturity. He highlighted the profound importance of reconciliation, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan—a time dedicated to reflection, forgiveness, and renewed brotherhood.
Broad Support and a Path Forward
Mayor Albakil Jikiri of Indanan town expressed his strong support for the decision, urging all parties to fully accept the resolution and move forward toward healing and cooperation after many years of tension and strife. The settlement process also benefited from the facilitation of Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan II and Bangsamoro Member of Parliament Abdulkarim Misuari, further solidifying the community-wide commitment to peace.
The 1103rd Infantry Brigade and 41st Infantry Battalion stressed the critical importance of ending intergenerational conflicts, noting that prolonged disputes disrupt livelihoods, hinder local development, and cast a long shadow over future generations. The activity concluded on a positive and amicable note, with both clans formally accepting the verdict. This agreement marks a significant milestone toward reconciliation, healing, and the establishment of lasting peace between Tiis village and Talipao Proper village, setting a powerful example for conflict resolution in the region.
