Cebu Students Master Wikipedia Editing in 2026 Workshop Celebrating 25th Anniversary
Cebu Students Join Wikipedia Workshop for 25th Anniversary

A successful workshop empowering a new generation of Cebuano knowledge contributors was held at the Cebu City Public Library on January 17, 2026. Titled "Wiki Pagkat-on sa Sugbo," the event was spearheaded by WikiClub Cebu to coincide with the global celebration of Wikipedia's 25th Anniversary.

Bridging Knowledge and Community

The workshop welcomed students of Communication and Journalism from Cebu Normal University (CNU) and the University of the Visayas (UV). Wikipedians introduced the platform's vital role as the world's largest and most popular free encyclopedia. They clearly explained the Five Pillars of Wikipedia, emphasizing writing from a neutral point of view, free content, respect for contributors, and adherence to a set of fundamental principles.

A core message from the speakers was an encouragement for participants to share their own Cebuano heritage and local history. They stressed that one does not need to be a global expert to contribute. A genuine understanding of a local story and the motivation to help are invaluable gifts for future generations.

Hands-On Training for Digital Contributors

Students received practical training on how to edit and update Wikipedia articles using reliable sources. They were also introduced to Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository where they can upload photos for use across Wikipedia and related projects.

For many, the simple act of uploading a photo they took on their own campus was a rewarding experience, proving that even small contributions can significantly aid others. The workshop reframed the use of online time, suggesting that minutes spent on "doom scrolling" could instead be used to build communal knowledge, benefiting people in Cebu and around the world.

A New Perspective on Sharing Stories

A thought-provoking point raised by a speaker highlighted that most shared photos and stories are captured during the day. However, nighttime imagery and experiences hold their own unique narratives deserving of attention and offering a different perspective worth contributing to the global record.

Ultimately, the Wikipedians shared their journey in building and expanding a community. It's not just about creating articles but reforging human connections, using technology as a bridge between people rather than a divider. Wikipedia quietly becomes a meeting place for knowledge, creativity, and humanity.

For the CNU and UV students, "Wiki Pagkat-on sa Sugbo" served as a powerful reminder that their generation holds a key role in fostering hope and change. By contributing to Wikipedia, they demonstrated that shared knowledge can build stronger communities and a clearer, more connected future.
