A seventeen-year conflict that cast a shadow over communities in Basilan province has officially ended. The warring families of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) commanders Tanad Yunus and Arasad Addala signed a historic peace agreement on Monday, January 19, 2026.
A Ceremony for Peace and Progress
The signing ceremony, a significant milestone for local peacebuilding, was held at the Raayat (People's) Hall of the Provincial Capitol in Sta. Clara village, Lamitan City. The event was witnessed by key figures who facilitated the reconciliation, including Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman, Police Colonel Cerrazid Umabong (Basilan police director), and Brigadier General Frederick Sales (commander of the 1101st Infantry Brigade).
Governor Hataman hailed the settlement as the largest and most significant achieved by the Provincial Government under his leadership. "This moment is proof that peace is possible even after decades of pain and division," Hataman stated. He emphasized that the collaborative effort involving security forces, elders, and communities can transform enemies into partners for progress.
Ending a Legacy of Violence
The feud, which began in 2009, stemmed from personal misunderstandings and grievances that escalated into violent confrontations. Its impact was severe:
- It directly affected 26 families across the municipalities of Al-Barka, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, and Tuburan.
- The conflict claimed the lives of more than 20 people.
- It persistently disrupted peace and hindered development in the affected areas for nearly two decades.
Hataman framed the agreement as a foundational step for future generations. "Basilan has waited long enough for this -- our children deserve a future free from fear... This settlement is not just about ending a feud; it's about building a foundation for lasting peace," he added.
Local Leaders Hail Model for Harmony
The successful mediation, supported by the provincial government, security sector, religious groups, and the council of elders, has been met with optimism by local officials. This agreement marks the eighth major conflict resolved under Governor Hataman's administration.
Akbar Mayor Alih Sali expressed his happiness with the initiative, noting it paves the way for continued peace and economic growth. Similarly, Tuburan Mayor Durie Kallahal voiced eagerness to replicate this provincial peace model in their municipality to strengthen community harmony and drive local development.
The ceremony was also attended by Dr. Aboulkhair Tarason (Mufti, Darul Ifta' of Basilan), Provincial Board Members Nasser Salain and Ronie Hantian, representatives from the Basilan Council of Elders, the Basilan Ulama Supreme Council, and lawyers from the Basilan Public Attorney's Office.
