Atty. Torreon Files Motion to Dismiss Obstruction of Justice Case with DOJ

Attorney Israelito Torreon has formally requested the Department of Justice (DOJ) to dismiss an obstruction of justice case filed against him by the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG). The case stems from his actions during the attempted arrest of Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, leader of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC), in August 2024.

Legal Defense Cites Professional Duty and Timing Concerns

In a counter-affidavit submitted on Friday, January 23, 2026, Torreon argued that he was merely performing his duties as a lawyer during the police operation at the KOJC compound in Davao City. He emphasized that his actions were aimed at protecting his client and ensuring public safety within the premises.

Torreon also raised concerns about the timing of the complaint, noting that it was filed in December 2025, only after previous cases against him had been dismissed. This, he suggested, indicates a potential misuse of legal processes.

Background of the Case and Related Legal Proceedings

The PNP-CIDG's complaint accuses Torreon of violating Presidential Decree No. 1829, which pertains to obstruction of the apprehension and prosecution of criminal offenders. This is directly linked to the events surrounding the failed arrest attempt of Quiboloy.

Pastor Apollo Quiboloy is currently detained at the Pasig City Jail, facing separate charges of alleged human trafficking and child abuse. The ongoing legal battles highlight the complex interplay between legal representation, law enforcement actions, and high-profile cases in the Philippines.

This development underscores the tensions between defense attorneys and police authorities in sensitive operations, raising questions about the boundaries of legal advocacy and obstruction laws.
