PNP Launches Probe into Police Officers Suspected of Aiding Atong Ang's Evasion
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated a formal investigation into both active and retired police officers who are suspected of assisting the fugitive businessman Atong Ang in evading arrest. This development comes as Ang faces serious criminal charges related to the disappearance of several cockfighters, a case that has gripped national attention.
Focus on Possible Protection and Involvement
According to PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño, there is no official record of police security details assigned to Atong Ang. Consequently, authorities are now scrutinizing the possibility that Ang received protection from private guards, which may have involved collusion with law enforcement personnel. The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) is particularly examining the roles of what are described as "seasoned police officers" in facilitating his escape.
Administrative and Criminal Charges Under Consideration
In response to the potential involvement of active and retired police officers, PNP Chief Melencio Nartatez Jr. has ordered a comprehensive review to explore the filing of both administrative and criminal cases against those found culpable. This move underscores the PNP's commitment to accountability within its ranks. Additionally, senior officers are under investigation, with information being verified regarding the possible implication of four retired generals, though the exact number of individuals involved is still being confirmed.
Background and Ongoing Efforts
Previously, the CIDG disclosed that it had received 17 tips regarding Atong Ang's possible whereabouts after issuing a wanted poster offering a P10 million reward for his capture. This fugitive businessman has been at large, with his case highlighting broader issues of law enforcement integrity and the challenges in apprehending high-profile suspects. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to unravel the full extent of any police assistance in his evasion.
