Incident Details

According to the investigation, the victim, alias Jona, sought help from barangay officials, who accompanied her to the Mabolo Police Station to file a complaint against her husband for physical abuse. The victim stated that her husband attacked her when she confronted him about a debt he owed to another person, for which she was being held responsible. Suspect's Defense

When questioned, Joel denied the accusations but admitted to slapping his wife because of her nagging. He claimed he had been living at his sibling's house for two weeks after being thrown out by his wife, but she continued to follow him and nag him. Joel argued that he loses control when nagged, leading him to hit his wife multiple times.

Suspect's Criminal History

It was also learned that Joel had only been released from prison in 2024 after serving 14 years for robbery with homicide.

Charges Filed

As of now, the victim is determined to have her husband imprisoned. Joel will face charges for violating Republic Act 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children (VAWC) Act.
