Bacolod Environment Office Issues Alert on Fraudulent Garbage Collector Scams

In a recent development, the Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office (Benro) has issued a stern warning to residents of Bacolod City to remain vigilant against individuals and groups who are posing as garbage collectors to solicit cash donations. This alert comes in response to a formal complaint lodged with Benro regarding a group identifying itself as the Garbage Collector Association Bacolod City, which allegedly sought donations under the pretext of assisting a hospitalized member.

Official Statement from Benro Officer-in-Charge

Lawyer Allyn Luv Dignadice, the officer-in-charge at Benro, emphasized that the City Government, in collaboration with its new private garbage contractor, has not authorized any person or organization to request donations or cash contributions from the public. "We highly discourage the giving of cash donations to individuals claiming to be garbage collectors. A lot can happen, and there are scammers the public must be wary of," she stated firmly. Dignadice urged Bacolodnons to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to prevent falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.

Persistent Waste Collection Issues and Public Cooperation

Despite efforts to normalize garbage collection schedules across the city, complaints about uncollected waste continue to surface. Dignadice highlighted the importance of public cooperation, particularly from barangay officials, in combating illegal dumping practices that exacerbate the city's waste management challenges. She called for a collective effort to maintain cleanliness and adhere to proper disposal protocols to support the ongoing initiatives.

New Waste Management Operations Underway

To address the backlog and issues left by the previous contractor, the International Solid Waste Integrated Management Specialist (ISWIMS) has commenced operations in Bacolod. This move aims to clear accumulated waste and improve overall waste management efficiency. Dignadice provided an update on the current waste collection metrics, noting that daily collection now ranges from 1,700 to 2,500 cubic meters. All collected waste is being properly disposed of at the sanitary landfill located in Barangay Felisa, ensuring environmentally sound practices.

This situation underscores the need for heightened awareness among residents to protect themselves from scams while supporting the city's enhanced waste management strategies. By staying informed and cooperative, Bacolodnons can contribute to a cleaner and safer urban environment.
