Basilan: Zero Firecracker Incidents on New Year 2026

Basilan province has successfully welcomed the year 2026 without a single injury or accident linked to firecrackers or pyrotechnics, marking a significant achievement in public safety.

Peaceful Celebration Across All Municipalities

Police Colonel Cerrazid Umabong, the director of the Basilan Provincial Police Office, confirmed the positive result on Thursday, January 1, 2026. He stated that a perfect safety record was maintained across all areas under the province's jurisdiction. This includes Lamitan City and the municipalities of Akbar, Al-Barka, Hadji Mohammad Ajul, Hadji Muhtamad, Lantawan, Maluso, Sumisip, Tabuan Lasa, Tipo-Tipo, Tuburan, and Ungkaya Pukan.

"At the peak of the traditional year-end celebrations, no injuries, accidents, or other incidents linked to firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices were documented in BARMM-governed localities of Basilan," Umabong emphasized in an official statement. He also noted that the province enjoyed overall peace throughout the entire Yuletide season, with no untoward incidents reported.

Coordinated Security Efforts Lauded

The successful outcome was the result of meticulous planning and coordination between local government and security forces. Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman personally recognized the efforts that made this milestone possible.

In a meeting held on New Year's Day, Governor Hataman commended Police Colonel Umabong and Brigadier General Frederick Sales, the commander of the 1101st Infantry Brigade. "Their hard work ensured our residents could celebrate these important holidays safely and peacefully, without disruption or harm," the governor said.

A Model for Future Festivities

Governor Hataman attributed the achievement to well-executed, coordinated security protocols and the commendable cooperation of the people of Basilan. This proves that festive traditions can be enjoyed while prioritizing public safety above all else.

The governor expressed hope that this year's accomplishment would set a new standard. He aims for it to serve as a sustainable model for responsible and secure celebrations in Basilan for many years to come. The province, which is under the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), has demonstrated that community cooperation and proactive security measures can lead to a truly hazard-free holiday.
