Cebu City has implemented a significant budget reduction for the upcoming Sinulog 2026 festival, prioritizing urgent disaster recovery efforts in the wake of a recent typhoon. The city government, under Mayor Nestor Archival, has decided to scale down the originally proposed budget from P100 million to P78 million.
Budget Reallocation for Disaster Response
The primary reason for the budget cut is the rechanneling of funds towards rehabilitation and recovery programs for communities affected by Typhoon Tino. Mayor Archival emphasized that this adjustment reflects the administration's priority to address the immediate needs arising from the calamity. Despite the lower allocation, the city aims to deliver a festival that matches the success of the previous year's edition.
"We will continue the success of the celebration, but at a lower cost," Archival stated. He explained that the decision underscores a commitment to responsible fiscal management while responding to pressing humanitarian concerns.
Confirmed Participants and Event Logistics
As of the November 30 deadline, a total of 37 contingents have confirmed their participation in the grand parade for next year. The lineup is composed of:
- 12 contingents from outside Cebu City
- 17 from Cebu City's barangays and schools
- 7 from the Province of Cebu and neighboring cities
- 1 guest performer: the Masskara Festival from Bacolod
For the parade logistics, the city will retain the carousel route used last year. However, to improve crowd control, there will be a limit on the number of floats, and large groups following contingent vehicles will be discouraged. Notably, street parties will not be permitted. Any potential festival-related activities will depend on the Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI), with possible venues including South Road Properties, Escario, Plaza Independencia, and the IT Park area.
A United Celebration Amidst Challenges
The theme for Sinulog 2026 will be "United in Faith and Love", alongside the traditional call of "One Beat, One Dance." The prize money for participants will remain unchanged from the previous year.
Mayor Archival expressed confidence in delivering a memorable event, citing the successful 2025 festival that concluded around 10 PM and featured 43 contingents, including guest performers. The city government's approach demonstrates a balance between upholding a cherished cultural tradition and fulfilling its duty to citizens recovering from a natural disaster.
