Cebu Governor Slashes Terminal Fees for PUVs to Ease Fuel Price Burden
Cebu Cuts Terminal Fees for Buses, Vans, Taxis for 3 Months

In a significant move to alleviate the financial strain on public transport operators, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro has announced a temporary reduction in terminal fees for vehicles entering the Cebu South Bus Terminal (CSBT) and Cebu North Bus Terminal (CNBT). This initiative, effective for three months starting March 25, 2026, coincides with the upcoming Semana Santa period and aims to counter the ongoing impact of rising fuel prices nationwide, exacerbated by the Middle East crisis.

Substantial Fee Reductions Across Vehicle Types

Under the new rates, terminal fees have been slashed across all categories of public utility vehicles (PUVs). For van-for-hire services, the fee drops from P200 to P150, representing a 25% decrease. Bus operators will see their terminal fees reduced from P250 to P200, a 20% cut, while taxi drivers benefit from a halving of their fee, from P20 down to P10. These adjustments are designed to provide immediate relief to drivers grappling with escalating operational costs.

Governor Emphasizes Support for Drivers

Governor Baricuatro underscored the importance of this measure during her announcement on March 25, 2026. She stated, "It's going to be a big help for them, of course, with the rising prices of fuel. This will aid them significantly." The reduction is part of a broader effort to support the transportation sector, which has been hit hard by the fuel price surge linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Terminal Administration Clarifies Financial Impact

Ahmed Cuizon, the Terminal Administrator, explained that the fee reduction does not signify a financial loss for the provincial government. He emphasized that the primary purpose of the terminals is to serve the public rather than generate profit. Cuizon noted, "The income from terminal fees is typically allocated for incidental expenses, such as employee salaries, equipment maintenance, and other operational costs." This clarification aims to reassure stakeholders that the terminals' core functions will remain unaffected.

Positive Reception from Transport Sector

The decision has been met with widespread approval from drivers of vans-for-hire, buses, and taxis operating at CSBT and CNBT. Many have expressed gratitude for the temporary relief, highlighting how it eases their financial burden during a challenging economic period. The move is expected to foster goodwill and support within the local transportation community, particularly as travel demand increases during Semana Santa.

This fee reduction initiative reflects Cebu's proactive approach to addressing economic hardships faced by essential service providers. By implementing these measures, the provincial government demonstrates its commitment to public welfare and economic stability in the face of external pressures.
