Metro Cebu Traffic Hits 100,000 Vehicles as Christmas Rush Begins
Christmas Traffic Jam: 100K Vehicles Expected in Metro Cebu

Metro Cebu is experiencing severe traffic congestion as the Christmas rush intensifies, with authorities warning motorists of bumper-to-bumper conditions on major roads. The surge is driven by residents traveling for last-minute shopping, parties, reunions, and other holiday activities.

City Officials Warn of Prolonged Congestion

Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival confirmed the significant increase in vehicle volume, attributing it to festive shopping, gatherings, and celebrations. He stated that during the holiday season, everyone goes out, and its impact on traffic is unavoidable. The congestion is expected to persist and may even worsen during the Sinulog festival in January, before easing towards the end of December.

Estimates project that up to 100,000 vehicles will traverse the city's roads this holiday season. In response, the Cebu City government has committed to clearing roads of illegally parked vehicles and other obstructions. Large trucks are also being restricted to nighttime travel when traffic is lighter.

Mandaue City Implements Traffic Management Measures

In neighboring Mandaue City, the situation is equally challenging. Hyll Retuya, head of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (TEAM), reported a rise in vehicle numbers not just during peak hours but throughout the day. He noted that the increase is understandable for December, as people are out spending for the holidays.

Key areas experiencing the worst gridlock include locations near malls and packed parking lots, such as:

  • UN Avenue
  • MC Briones St.
  • Pacific Mall vicinity
  • Highway Seno
  • AC Cortes Avenue

TEAM has deployed all available personnel and mobile assets to these busy zones to manage the flow and respond quickly to incidents. Furthermore, duty schedules have been adjusted to ensure traffic management during the early morning Misa de Gallo masses.

Public Advisory for Smoother Travel

Authorities are urging the public to avoid non-essential travel, especially during peak hours, to prevent being stuck on the road. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes with less traffic and to arm themselves with ample patience.

Mayor Archival emphasized the government's goal, stating their efforts are focused on making streets as smooth and manageable as possible for everyone during this busy festive period.
