Matanao Residents Reap Benefits of Public Spending with New Infrastructure Projects
Residents of Matanao Municipality are experiencing the tangible results of their tax contributions as the Provincial Government of Davao del Sur formally turned over two critical infrastructure projects on March 19, 2026. The initiatives, valued at a combined ₱3.1 million, are set to significantly improve both educational facilities and frontline government services in the community, demonstrating how public funds can directly enhance local development.
Rebuilding Education and Restoring Hope in Asinan
The first project involves a one-storey, two-classroom school building at Asinan Elementary School, constructed at a cost of nearly ₱1.6 million. For the school community, this new structure represents far more than just additional physical space—it symbolizes a profound recovery and resilience following severe challenges.
School principal Alejandro Tangpos vividly recounted the difficulties faced after a powerful earthquake severely damaged their previous facilities, displacing both teachers and students. "When I arrived here, I was truly amazed because the situation at Asinan Elementary School was very difficult… it was severely damaged by the earthquake, and we were displaced," Tangpos explained, highlighting the community's struggle.
He expressed deep gratitude to Governor Yvonne Roña Cagas and Vice Governor Marc Cagas for prioritizing their needs, noting that the new building addresses a long-standing requirement, especially after the school secured a new site through provincial support. "Thank you very much for truly giving us this support and prioritizing us to receive a building," Tangpos said, while also expressing hope for additional projects as the school still lacks adequate facilities.
Education experts emphasize that adequate classroom infrastructure plays a crucial role in improving learning outcomes. Global studies by organizations such as UNESCO confirm that access to safe and conducive learning environments helps increase student attendance, reduce dropout rates, and enhance overall academic performance, particularly in rural and disaster-affected regions.
Strengthening Grassroots Governance in Barangay Ceboza
The second project involves the comprehensive repair and renovation of the barangay hall in Barangay Ceboza, completed at a cost of nearly ₱1.5 million. This upgraded facility is expected to significantly enhance the delivery of basic services and improve local governance efficiency.
Barangay halls serve as the primary hub for community programs, dispute resolution, and administrative services at the grassroots level throughout the Philippines. The Department of the Interior and Local Government consistently emphasizes the importance of functional barangay facilities in ensuring efficient governance, effective disaster response coordination, and meaningful citizen engagement.
With this improved infrastructure, residents can now anticipate more accessible services ranging from documentation processing and social assistance distribution to community meetings and emergency response operations. The renovation represents a strategic investment in strengthening the very foundation of local governance.
Public Funds Transforming into Tangible Community Benefits
The turnover ceremonies for these projects, led by Vice Governor Marc Cagas and members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan representing Governor Yvonne Roña Cagas, highlight the essential role of local governments in translating tax revenues into concrete community improvements.
Infrastructure investments in education and governance are widely recognized as key drivers of inclusive development. For the people of Matanao, these projects serve as a powerful reminder that development, when effectively implemented, can be felt precisely where it matters most—in classrooms, communities, and everyday lives.
As Principal Tangpos eloquently summarized, the new school building is not merely a physical structure but a foundation for future opportunities—one that the community hopes will continue to grow with sustained government support and commitment to public welfare.
