Checkpoint Operation Leads to Major Drug, Weapon Bust

A routine police checkpoint in Cebu City turned into a significant arrest on Sunday night, December 14, 2025. At around 9:30 PM along F. Jaca Street in Barangay Inayawan, officers from the Inayawan Police Station intercepted a man driving a motorcycle without a helmet.

The suspect was identified as Ricky Mahusay, alias "Etching," a 25-year-old single resident from Sitio Colo in the same barangay. Police flagged him down for the traffic violation and asked to see his motorcycle's Certificate of Registration (CR), Official Receipt (OR), and driver's license.

Drugs Accidentally Revealed During Document Check

As Mahusay reached for his wallet to present his documents, two medium-sized plastic sachets containing suspected shabu accidentally fell to the ground. This immediate discovery prompted the officers to handcuff him for further inspection.

The confiscated illegal drugs had a total weight of 10.25 grams, with an estimated street value of P68,632. A subsequent body search yielded an even more dangerous find: a .22 caliber pistol loaded with three live bullets.

Suspect Admits Ownership, Claims Personal Use

In an interview with SunStar Superbalita Cebu, Ricky Mahusay admitted ownership of the illegal drugs. He claimed he purchased them for personal consumption but stated he did not know the identity of the person who sold them to him.

"I didn't notice the checkpoint because I was distracted by other vehicles! I fumbled when getting my wallet, and the two packs of shabu fell," Mahusay explained to reporters. He also disclosed a prior criminal record, having been jailed previously for a case of frustrated murder after stabbing someone.

Mahusay is currently detained at the Inayawan Police Station. Authorities are now preparing formal charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 and illegal possession of a firearm against him. The operation highlights the continued vigilance of local police in combating illegal drugs and loose firearms through community checkpoints.
