Mandaue City Illuminates Hope with Annual Christmas Ceremony

Mandaue City officially ushered in the holiday season on November 28, 2025, as Mayor Thadeo Jovito "Jonkie" Ouano led the annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony that carried profound significance for a community still recovering from recent natural disasters.

The traditional event transformed into a powerful demonstration of civic spirit as residents gathered to witness the illumination that now represents much more than seasonal decoration.

Mayor's Message of Unity and Strength

In his address to the assembled crowd, Mayor Ouano reflected on the challenges that tested Mandaue City in recent weeks, specifically mentioning the earthquake and typhoon that struck the area. "Tonight, as we gather for our annual Christmas Lighting Ceremony, our hearts have been tested but never broken," the mayor declared.

He emphasized how these natural events disrupted normal life and challenged the community's sense of security, yet residents stood together to rebuild. "In the past weeks, Mandaue City faced an earthquake and a typhoon. These were two challenges that shook our city, our routine activities, and our feeling of safety. But here we are, standing together once again," Ouano stated.

Christmas Lights as Symbols of Community Spirit

This year's Christmas lights carry deeper meaning for Mandauehanons, serving as symbols of resilience, unity, and an unbreakable spirit. Mayor Ouano explained that the decorations represent more than festive cheer.

"These are not just decorations. Every light we illuminate tonight represents a story of courage from responders, volunteers, city workers, barangay workers, and every ordinary citizen who chose to help without hesitation," he said.

The mayor reminded the community that Christmas continues to shine even during difficult times. "Christmas reminds us that even in the darkest moments, hope always finds a way to shine through. The light of Christmas cannot be extinguished no matter how difficult the challenges we face."

Recognition for Disaster Response Efforts

Mayor Ouano expressed gratitude toward various groups that provided assistance to families affected by the recent calamities. He specifically acknowledged the private sector, partners, national agencies, neighboring LGUs, and other organizations that extended help to those in need.

"Their generosity brought relief to many families who needed it most," the mayor affirmed, highlighting the collaborative effort that supported the city's recovery.

As the ceremony concluded with the city illuminated in Christmas lights, Mayor Ouano left residents with an inspiring message: "As we light up Mandaue City tonight, let this serve as a reminder that we build, we rise, and we prosper together."
