Mandaue City Expands Free Transport Services and Introduces Electric Vehicles
Commuters in Mandaue City can look forward to more accessible and convenient transportation options starting next week, as the city government launches additional routes for its free ride program. This initiative aims to alleviate the impact of rising fuel prices on residents, with a focus on enhancing mobility and sustainability.
Electric Vehicle Deployment and Partnerships
In a move towards greener solutions, the city has partnered with GGTI to deploy electric vehicles. Initially, two electric units will be rolled out on April 6, with plans to expand this fleet. Mayor Ouano expressed the city's ambition to increase the number to six electric vehicles, noting that four additional units are expected to arrive from Manila soon.
A two-week dry run for the electric vehicles will be conducted free of charge, and the mayor hopes to extend this trial period to one month. This step is part of broader efforts by local governments to address the challenges posed by escalating fuel costs.
Financial Adjustments and Cost Estimates
Despite allocating P40 million this year, even before the recent fuel price hikes, city officials have been compelled to revise their strategies. The rental cost for electric vehicles is estimated at P8,000 per day for short-term use, which could decrease to P7,000 for longer contracts. This fee includes a driver, while the city will provide conductors to assist passengers.
