President Marcos Inspects Service Contracting Program Amid Oil Price Concerns
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. conducted a personal inspection of the Service Contracting Program (SCP) implementation at the Araneta Center Bus Terminal in Cubao, Quezon City today, April 20. He was accompanied by DOTr Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez and LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza during the visit, which aimed to assess the program's progress and impact on the transportation sector.
Financial Support for PUV Operators
The Service Contracting Program provides financial assistance to public utility vehicle (PUV) operators in exchange for adhering to designated routes, ensuring sufficient trips, and offering fare discounts to commuters. This initiative covers jeepneys, UV Express, and buses operating across 545 routes in Metro Manila and several major regions. Its primary goal is to sustain vehicle operations and alleviate commuter expenses, particularly in light of the ongoing surge in global oil prices.
Government Commitment Amid Global Tensions
President Marcos emphasized that government support will continue as long as oil prices remain elevated, a situation linked to tensions in the Middle East. He estimated that approximately 20,000 vehicles are expected to participate in the program, highlighting its scale and potential to mitigate economic pressures on the transport industry.
Additional Measures Under Consideration
The government is currently studying further steps to reduce the impact of high oil prices on the transportation sector and the general public. This includes exploring additional relief mechanisms and policy adjustments to address the broader economic challenges posed by the volatile global market.
Support for Overseas Filipino Workers
In related developments, President Marcos also assured assistance for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who may be affected by the situation in the Middle East. This support encompasses repatriation efforts and livelihood aid, ensuring that Filipinos abroad receive necessary help during these uncertain times.
The inspection and announcements underscore the administration's proactive approach to managing economic disruptions, with a focus on both domestic transportation stability and international welfare concerns.
